Road surfacing with asphalt mixes requires the use of a heat source that reduces the viscosity of bitumen so that the assembly formed by aggregates and bituminous binder has adequate workability.

Traditionally manufacturing plants use heat sources coming from non-renewable energy sources  (fuel and gas) which significantly increases the environmental impact of paving process.

The Battle CO₂ project seeks to integrate the manufacturing process by making use of biomass as a heat source and integrating the manufacturing process and job sites with the proximity to the points of supply of renewable energy, such as biomass.
